stress erythrocytosis; spurious erythrocytosis (Gaisbock's syndrome)
Epidemiology:
- white, middle-aged, overweight, hard-working men
Pathology:
1) no increase in erythrocyte mass
2) relative dehydration
Clinical manifestations:
1) hypertension
2) anxiety
3) florid appearance
4) NO splenomegaly
Laboratory:
- complete blood count (CBC)
a) NO leukocytosis
b) hematocrit increased (50-60%)
